Course objectives

This 12 weeks Chinese language course is aimed at students who would like to learn conversational Chinese starting with Chinese basics. The course introduces everyday language and includes activities to practice all four language skills: reading comprehension, writing, listening comprehension and speaking. This course uses reference materials, cultural notes, grammar explanations, functions of language, etc. Students will be able to monitor their progress by taking a number of performance tests and a final achievement test.
After completing this course, you will be prepared to introduce yourself, ask basic questions, and conduct a brief conversation in Chinese.

  • Cover tones and simple finals to ensure accurate pronunciation.

2. Basic Vocabulary and Phrases:

  • Introduce essential vocabulary related to numbers, colors, family members, and everyday objects.

3. Grammar Basics:

  • Nouns, pronouns, and basic verb conjugations (present tense).

  • Simple sentence structures (subject-verb-object).

4. Useful Expressions and Survival Phrases:

  • Teach learners how to ask for directions, order food, or make simple requests.

  • Provide basic conversational phrases for everyday situations.

5. Cultural Insights:

6. Listening and Speaking Practice:

7. Reading and Writing Skills:

  • Focus on speaking skills rather than learning Chinese characters (making it accessible and enjoyable).

8. Interactive Activities:

  • Use vocabulary games, quizzes, and flashcards to reinforce learning.

  • Create pair/group activities to practice speaking and listening.

9. C&G Blackboard Resources:
